Interactive Dog Bowls – Slow ‘Em Up!

Interactive dog food bowls are used to slow the feeding time of dogs who love to gulp their food.

There are basically two types of interactive dog food bowls:

  • Puzzle type bowls where the food is placed in various compartments of the dog food bowl. The dog then has to figure out how to open/slide the compartments to get to the kibble.
  • Go Slow Bowls which have some sort of barrier in the bottom.  The dog has to eat around them to get his food.

Dash is a growing basset puppy with a growing puppy’s appetite – you would think this basset hound had never eaten a morsel in his whole life! And, since longer-bodied dog such as basset hounds can be prone to bloat (when the stomach twists, frequently resulting in death), it was important that I find a way to slow up his eating.

That’s how I discovered interactive dog bowls.

I chose the Aikiou Interactive Dog Bowl for Dash because I wanted him to be challenged;  this particular puzzle dog bowl not only slowed down his eating, but it also engaged Dash’s brain (which I envisioned to be two monkeys with a yoyo….).

The Aikiou dog bowl has covers for various food compartments so Dash has to slide some and twist others. It’s quite entertaining to watch him eat his breakfast as you can see from the video below.

The first time I showed Dash his interactive dog bowl, he was perplexed. It took him about 10 minutes to figure out how to open all the different compartments or spin the top to get to his breakfast. Six short weeks later and he’s a pro. Just check out the video below to see Dash the basset in action:

As a nice side benefit, the Aikiou interactive feeding bowl has proven so far to be indestructible. He seems to get a kick out of standing on top of it and throwing it around.

These interactive dog bowls not only slow down eating (always a good thing for a basset hound) but also provide mental stimulation. Smear a little peanut butter inside one of the compartments and give your pup a treat!
