Dog chew toys for teething puppies are a necessity of life when dealing with a young dog
….unless you have unlimited chair legs, shoes, etc.
After bringing home our new puppy, hereafter called ‘Woody’ also known as ‘OH NO! WHAT DID YOU DO?!!!’…we discovered that this Basset Bleu de Gascogne puppy would be a challenge to keep entertained.
We also discovered that Woody has an undeniable ‘chew tooth,’ ie, he will chew anything.
Now, some of his chewing artwork is interesting, like the time he was doused by a water bottle that exploded in his mouth and sprayed a newly painted wall. Now, THAT was funny.
But, when it came down to chewing wood furniture, it was dear Woody or me…and it wasn’t going to be ME.
Hints For Helping Soothe Gum Pain in Teething Puppies:
- Wet a microfiber washcloth, twist it, and freeze it. When your young puppy shows signs of chewing, toss a frozen washcloth his or her way. Chewing on the cold cloth soothes the gums.
- Please do NOT offer full ice cubes to your puppy. Although they might be soothing, ice cubes can be hard on new teeth and are not good as your puppy could easily swallow one whole – talk about an ice cream headache!
- You can also offer your pup some frozen fruit, such as strawberries or bananas, both of which are fine for dogs. I suggest doing this suggestion outside though as you’re sure to have a mess on your hands eventually. Our dogs all love frozen green beans and frozen carrots.
- Note: I do not recommend ANY rawhide products for young puppies. Rawhide can be ok for dogs who don’t get to the point of breaking the strong chew toy and swallowing it. Rawhide is NOT good for dogs. Look for substitutes, like these Bully chew sticks….just don’t ask what they’re made of – ewwww….
The Teething Process in Dogs
For the first six months of life, a dog will be teething. All 42 teeth should be completely in between six and seven months. But, the time leading up to that can be painful, literally and figuratively.
You may even see some indication when teething is occurring such as swollen gums, reduced appetite and exercise. Your puppy might even appear to be irritable – but, remember, it’s teething and can’t be helped.
Be gentle with your teething puppy as he or she might be in some discomfort. And, this too shall end…eventually.
Chilly Bones Are Made To Be Frozen
The last time I have a puppy, I don’t think Chilly Bones were around but I sure wish they had been. Similar to the idea of a frozen washcloth, these chew bones are meant to be frozen, time and time again.

Kong Toys Are Always A Great Choice For Teething Puppies
I’ve always bought the Kong brand of toy for all of my dogs. Even Mocha (my pit bull mix) couldn’t get through the strong rubber of a Kong.
I also love Kongs for the ability to stuff them with food items. Woody loves a Kong that I freeze with a bit of peanut butter inside (you don’t need much). Chewing the cold dog Kong toy also relieves the pain from a dog’s gums as they go through teething. Note: don’t bother buying the Kong stuff in a can – just use a bit of peanut butter or cheese to the inside of the dog toy.
Kong dog toys come in a variety of strengths, sizes, and shapes today so there’s something for every dog – even the most aggressive chewers.

Puppy Teething Rings Are Meant To Be Chewed And Eaten
Woody absolutely devoured the N-Bone Puppy Teething Rings shown in the first link below. He preferred the peanut butter chew rings but I’ve added a few more for picky chewers (IS there such a thing???).

Nylabones Are Very Hard Bones – Wonderful For Strong Chewing Puppies!
Now, disclaimer: Not all dogs love nylabones chewing bones. They are very hard bones which is great to soothe sore gums but, of all our dogs, only Woody has taken to chewing a nylabone. I suggest buying a single bone to test them.
