Controlling Shedding In Bassets – Well, It’s A Theory

Anyone who has ever loved a basset knows the risk of wearing any color clothing that doesn’t match the dog! Over here, we have four dogs in current residence, from white fur all the way to black fur…and every color in between.

Shedding is just a fact of life with some dogs – Bassets and Pugs are both offenders. And, we have one of each.

Whether a dog sheds or not is based on a few factors:

• Breed. Certain dog breeds shed more than others. Pugs, for example, seem to shed their body weigh every day!
• Individuals. Although certain breeds may shed more than other dogs, within those breeds, different color dogs may shed more. Using the Pug example the lighter colored Pugs, such as fawn color, shed more than the black Pugs.
• Life Style. Dogs that live in colder climates grow a winter coat that is warmer than their summer wear. So, in the Spring, you’ll see much more shedding as the dogs lose that heavier coat. Also, if your dog is primarily an indoor couch warmer, shedding might not be as evident as a more active dog.
• Stress, Nutrition. Both the amount of stress and the diet can cause changes in normal shedding. If shedding seems to be ramping up, it might be time for a trip to the veterinarian who can assess the situation.
• Bathing. My dogs shed tons after fresh baths so a brush comes along with us to the dog washing station.

Ways to Control Shedding

The very first thing we do when shedding seems to be heavier is to bathe the dogs with shampoos and conditioners that help with shedding, like those below. We always make sure to rinse them off very well.

As we rinse them, we do a lot of brushing with this bath brush to get as much hair off the dog and into the tub as possible.

Control Shedding With Daily Brushing – With The Right Brush

Daily brushing is the key to keeping the fur to a dull roar over here. And, we have different brushes for different grooming.

The Furminator is one of the best anti-shedding tools but it takes some getting used to. Since it has a small razor in it that pulls out the dull undercoat hairs, you should only go over the same patch of fur a maximum of 3 times before moving to another section on your dog. But, you’ll be AMAZED at what comes out!

Softer brushes will remove the top coat and help to redistribute the oils in the coat – you all know that special ‘basset’ smell, right? To me it’s the sign that we share our home with an adorable hound. To others though? Not everyone is quite as forgiving as I am…..A little spritzer after a brushing helps control the normal odor.

A slicker brush is another type of tool although we use ours on Goldie, our girl with hair, not fur. Still, when run over Dash, it picks up very fine hairs.
