Basset Hound: Your Happy Healthy PetBasset Hound Books Help You Understand Your Lovable Hound

I have a library full of basset hound books – there’s books on training a basset in obedience (ha!), basset agility, housebreaking the beast, fun tricks with your hound, etc. These books are specifically written to educate the owners of a basset hound (or, as Dash prefers, his slave….). And, there’s a good reason for this….

The basset breed as a whole is a fairly healthy breed but they can be plagued with back problems, leg problems, and, most alarming, a condition called ‘bloat’ where the stomach fills with gas. If bloat is not caught quickly enough, it’s bye-bye doggy.

They also frequently need special care for their ears, and, sometimes, their eyes.

So, a new basset owner (or even a seasoned basset hound lover) needs some information to understand their chosen hound breed and how to care for him or her throughout a long life.

Any of these books would make a wonderful present for a basset hound lover.

And, when it come to training a basset hound in obedience? You’ll want every book you can find!

Basset Hound Obedience Training Books

Training a basset hound in obedience or, well, anything for that matter, can try the patience of a saint. Basset hounds are notoriously stubborn but, to be fair, they’re bred that way.

Bassets were originally bred to hunt rabbits. No, they’re not particularly fast but, what they are is short so they can go under briars where a lot of dogs can’t go. They’re also LOUD as any basset owner will attest, with a mournful bay that tells hunters they’re on the trail of something interesting.

Fun note: see that white tip on a basset’s tail? It was bred into the breed so that hunters could see where the dog is in a field of tall weeds.

Anyway, bassets are bred to follow their nose so training in a quiet, unobtrusive area is paramount to getting any kind of success out of my basset, Dash.

And, that’s the short (and long) reason as to how I’ve amassed a basset hound training book library as large as Library of Congress’s.
