A ScatMat Put An End To Dash And His Counter Cruising
I was fed up with my counter cruiser dog. I’d just lost ANOTHER whole stick of room temperature butter I left on the counter while I ran to feed the cat.
I returned to….a broken butter dish (again…) and a greasy-mouthed basset. Dash had gotten on my very last nerve this time. This was WAR, and I was going to win.
Dash is a known counter cruiser basset, and, being so very long, he is able to reach to the back of the counter. Nothing is safe from this crafty hound.
Until….
After much research and some experimentation (think hot peppers inside a filet mignon – didn’t work), I was left to only one option – that was a ScatMat.
What Are ScatMats?
ScatMats are devices made of a sturdy vinyl that have electrical wires running through them. When turned on, pressure on the mat results in a shock to the offending animal! The shock is perfectly harmless but appears to have lasting consequences as you can see in the videos below.
ScatMats come in different sizes so you can protect a kitchen counter with the strip size or, if you have a dog who insists that the sofa is his, you can buy a larger mat to protect the sofa surface from the pet.
Some scatmats operate with a pulsing electronic zap – they will zap for 3 seconds, turn off for 2 seconds, zap again for 3 seconds until the pup learns his lesson.
How I Used The PetSafe Electronic ScatMat
I placed the PetSafe ScatMat on the front of the kitchen counter and secured it with the accompanying velcro strips. I even taped down the edges to ensure a good contact with Dash’s paws if he jumped up to feed off the counter.
There are three different settings on the PetSafe ScatMat – low, medium and high shock. I saw no reason for the low or medium settings and pressed the button for ‘high.’ I was hunting for bear….
I then set up my new Go Pro camera to record the action – that’s exactly what I got.
It took about 10 minutes of filming to capture how the PetSafe shock mat worked.
In this short clip, you see Dash licking his lips in anticipation of the goodies I’ve left on the counter and taking the shock – I love the look he throws over his shoulder when he walks off:
This second short clip was taken 30 minutes later – you can see the lesson stuck in this stubborn basset. He’s licking his lips in anticipation but decides not to chance it. Success!
ScatMats for the win! As of today, a week later, I’ve removed the ScatMat and temped Dash with more goodies. No way that dog is going to chance it!
In short, ScatMats can protect any surface from any pet – that includes cats. Electronic mats cure pets from jumping on furniture, adopting a sofa as your dog’s own, or messing with that beautiful Chrismas Tree. Some owners have even protected the top of convertible cars from offending cats!
You can even protect an entire room by laying one of these scatmats across the doorway.

Note: ScatMats come in various sizes, from the smallest strip that I have all the way up to 60″ x 12″ which will protect a sofa. They also can be connected together to protect even larger surfaces. Most run on batteries (9 volt); some have adapters so they can plug into a socket.
