The Right Dog Houses Can Makes Being Outdoors A Joy In Any Weather

We currently have four dogs and a cat roaming around our house. Two of the dogs are over twelve, two are young – just over two years old.

On nice days, we like to leave the younger dogs outside in our beautiful fenced yard. Being outside burns off some energy that would otherwise translate to endless chases around the house, bouncing off the furniture – you get the idea.

But, when weather is an issue (rain or even snow), the backyard was no longer the paradise for the younger dogs. Instead, I constantly worried that they would not have shelter outside during inclement weather.

We also added an insulated door to keep the wind out and placed it on a raised pallet to further ensure that rain or snow wouldn’t get in.

Things To Consider Before Buying A Dog House

Before purchasing a dog house, I did a fair amount of research about the best dog houses on the market. Here’s some things I suggest you investigate so you get the right dog house on the first try.

• Dog house size – If you’re housing more than one dog, like we are, you’ll want to order a roomier home for the pups outside. But, you should order the smallest size dog house you can – this will help the dogs conserve their heat in winter.
• Length of house – Dash is a very l-o-n-g basset hound, coming in right around 45″ from nose to rump. Add another 16″ for his tail and that’s a lot of basset hound! I wanted to make sure that the dog house we chose was long enough to house him comfortably and wide enough for him to turn around so he could settle on the dog bed.
• Material used – Dog houses come in a variety of materials. The insulated plastic dog house we bought is warm, even on the snowiest of days.
• Ease of cleaning – Some dog houses have removable tops so it’s easy to remove bedding or clean the inside. Our dog house requires one of us to climb inside but, thankfully, a cleaning is not needed very often as the dogs only relax inside. Some folks like to add straw to the bottom of the dog house to further insulate the pups against cold. In that case, straw would probably require a rake and some fresh straw once in a while.

Heating For Dog Houses

There are a few options to cozy up Fido’s dog house with some heat. I prefer the heated dog pads which I put their dog bed upon. It provides a gentle heat from below. The dogs have never complained!

For all of our outdoor electrical connections, we use an insulator like the last link below. This insulator keeps the cords together and away from elements which might trigger them to turn off.
