Poor Rita was miserable in the vet assigned traditional e-collar

Whether you call it an Elizabethan collar, an e-collar, a cone for dogs after surgery, or the dreaded ‘cone of shame,’ there are times when you need to keep your dog from chewing at a wound; one of these collars is a must to have on hand.

DISCLAIMER! A soft cone, like the Kong, might not be good for every dog after eye surgery as it does not protect the eye from being rubbed on the ground! MAKE SURE to check with your vet before buying this type of cone of shame.

In the picture to the left is dear little Rita after some eye surgery. She was stuck in the cone of shame for over six weeks. At first, she was ok with it but then she started to try to get out of it all the time. I had to investigate (and buy) a new soft E-collar that would function like an Elizabethan collar but would not bother her as much.

Additionally, Rita is a small dog from St. Croix; she only stands about 8″ or so. The hard e-collar that the vet put on her would trip her up, especially when walking the steps. It also tended to dig into her neck when she laid down, making her (and me) even more miserable.

Dash was neutered at six months so a cone after surgery was going to be necessary. I also knew that Dash the Basset was going to have an impossible time maneuvering with a hard plastic e-collar on – after all, he was also only about 8″ tall when he was neutered. Luckily for him, I’d done my research and was ready with a soft e-collar which also functions as a pillow – for a basset hound to carry around his own pillow was a huge win for both of us!

Soft Elizabethan Cones of Shame (E-Collars)

After an extensive search, I found a soft e-collar which worked much better for both Rita and Dash – I bought the Kong Cloud E-Collar shown in the first link below. These e-collars are much more comfortable for most dogs yet still do the job of keeping the front end from worrying the hind end!

Some of the benefits I see personally from these soft e-collars are:

  1. Rita and Dash were both much happier in a soft cone of shame than in the plastic Elizabethan collars. They were both able to continue on with all of their normal activities, such as walking, running, eating, etc.
  2. A soft E-collar functions as a pillow for naptime (her’s and mine)
  3. The flexible Elizabethan collar attaches and holds fast to the dog’s regular collar. There is no wriggling out of this eCollar.
  4. Your dog cannot reach any part of him or herself when this eCollar is properly on your pet.
  5. If your dog sleeps with you, like mine do, it’s a whole lot more comfortable to sleep next to a pet with this soft, inflatable collar than the hard plastic one.
  6. Velcro attachments, unlike those plastic buttons on the hard plastic cones, allows for a fully adjustable eCollar.
  7. Easy to clean. Just toss in the water and use light warmth to tumble dry.

Traditional E-Collars

The traditional Elizabethan collars are made of hard plastic. They attach right to the dog’s collar to prevent him or her from turning around to worry an injury. Whether your dog is allergic to fleas, has a hot spot, or a wound that must remain covered, an E-collar should be something you always have on hand.

E Collar Alternatives

I can’t vouch for these E collar alternatives as I’ve never used one. I can tell you thought that I wouldn’t put a dog in one of these alternatives to an E collar if I lived in a warm climate – I can’t imagine the things would be comfortable. However, if surgery was done in colder weather, these e collar alternatives might function to also keep your doggy friend warm.
